History: Abby started working at County as an OB nurse, after her divorce was final and her ex stiffed her on the money for medical school, she went back to nursing in the ER to pay for school. Carter eventually decided to pay off Abby's tuition costs and she graduated without debt for her final year. Now she's an intern and learning the ropes of specializing in emergency medicine.
Personal life is something Abby keeps to herself mostly. Her unhappy childhood with a bi-polar mother, her own alcoholism, and she's had relationships with both Luka and Carter since being divorced.
He was here. He was alive. She new that much. Still Abby couldn't stop thinking about how she felt when Chuny came to tell her *the* news. Or didn't feel.
Numb.
The news that Luka was dead had left her feeling numb. After the initial shock, the gasped "Oh my god!" numbness, emptiness, settled over her. And when Carter had gone off after the body (oh how she hated to think of Luka that way--the body) she found herself operating by rote. She did the tasks asked of her by relying on muscle memory and not much else.
Finding out he wasn't dead just as the numbness had started to wear off and acceptance was settling in should have made her feel--something. It didn't. It was shock all over again. More numbness. But this was different. It wasn't the sense of loss and regret that made her numb, it was the fact that she had reacted that way when she thought he was dead. That he could affect her so much even after their relationship was long over and she had moved on to someone else.
And now he was here. In the hospital. Upstairs, only a few feet away if you wanted to think about it vertically. She spent the whole day trying to get upstairs to see him. Well, most of the day. In between she was furious and then grateful to Carter. Furious for the letter he sent home with Luka. Grateful for Luka he sent home with the letter.
"S-hit." She muttered as she finally managed to sneak away. She was going upstairs and she was going to see him. See Luka. Who wasn't dead. "S-hit."
